Taken from a concert in Stockholm, Sweden, this well-recorded CD mostly features trumpeters Cootie Williams and Cat Anderson, tenor-saxophonist Paul Gonsalves and altoist Johnny Hodges as the main soloists in a set with Duke Ellington's orchestra. "The Opener," "Blow by Blow" and "The Prowling Cat" have rarely been recorded and even the more familiar pieces are given new life, highlighted by a definitive rendition of "Harlem."

Do you know what’s fantastic about two or three bands leading the way for an entire genre of music? No matter how you try to validate your own ideas, no matter how many other influences bring gifts to your sound, and no matter how many generations of acts before yours have made you a thirteenth cousin to those sworn bands, you’ll always feel their hot, patronizing breath on your neck, and Deaf Dealer’s collar is singed pretty badly…

She often appears in concert with her husband, Lars Hannibal, a guitarist and lutenist. Petri's repertory is extensive, especially in the Baroque realm with works by J.S. Bach, Telemann, Vivaldi, Handel, Corelli, Sammartini, and many others.

With this release,Hodgson dove head first into the '80s sound, both with production and instruments. Gone was the music of Supertramp(long, drawn-out prog/art rock pieces), and in its place, '80s dance-pop, not unlikeWang Chung. Hodgson wanted to leave the past behind him, and with the help of top session players (including drummer Jeff Porcaro), he seemed to want to branch out and experiment with other forms of music, such as reggae, pop, dance, and synth pop. The problem is that for the most part, it did not work.

This album is an exception in Robert Lokwood Jr's , as it's the only one on which he accompanies himself, from beginning to end, on his acoustic twelve-string guitar. This is the only time he allowed himself to go back to the repertory of Rober Johnson!

Claudio Scimone is one of the international leaders of the chamber music and early music movements. He studied with Dimitri Mitropoulos and Franco Ferrara, and also studied early music and interpretation. In 1959, he formed the chamber orchestra I Solisti Veneti in Padua and has remained associated with it ever since. It quickly achieved a reputation for excellence, and in 1975, Scimone took the orchestra for its first appearance at the annual Salzburg Festival in Austria, only to be invited back every year since.

"In the Uncommon Market," of course, refers to Europe, where Norman Granz caught the Ellington band numerous times with his tape machines in the 1960s. But it could also refer to the unusual repertoire featured on this collection, with only one standard, "In a Sentimental Mood," in a shelfful of out of the way Ellingtonia. These tracks, of indeterminate date, come from Ellington band concerts in Stockholm, Sweden, and Pastacitta, Italy, supplemented by some rare trio selections recorded in a museum in St. Paul-de-Vence, France, for a short film on Duke and the painter Joan Miró. The famous reed players are out in full cry; clarinetist Jimmy Hamilton thrives over the cool vamp of "Silk Lace," Johnny Hodges croons and sighs as only Johnny Hodges could in the lovely Shakespearian ballad "Star-Crossed Lovers"…
