Both the works on this recording were written during wartime. Debussy’s 1915 En blanc et noir, composed during a late creative burst, is his musical response to the horrors of World War I. Messiaen’s revolutionary Visions de l’Amen from 1943, written to be performed by the composer and his teenage pupil, Yvonne Loriod, is a profound religious meditation whose emotional intensity is overwhelming. The role of the two pianos is clearly divided. Melodic and expressive elements are confined to the second piano, Messiaen’s part, whereas all that is percussion, brilliance and rhythmic development is heard in the first piano, Loriod’s part.

A world renowned specialist in the music of Sergei Prokofiev, Valery Gergiev and his Mariinsky Orchestra and opera company have performed all of the composer's symphonies, concerti and operas on numerous occasions, both in St. Petersburg and on tour. This new video of Prokofiev's opera The Gambler, recorded and filmed in high-resolution at the historic Mariinsky Theatre in 2010, stars celebrated Russian tenor Vladimir Galuzin and bass Sergei Aleksashkin. Premiered in 1929 at the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie, Brussels, the opera was originally conceived for first performance at the Mariinsky Theatre, but it was postponed due to the Revolution in 1917. On this filmed version, Georgian director Temur Chkheidze (who directed the opera with critical success at the Metropolitan Opera in 2001) gives a fresh look to Prokofiev's first opera. The Gambler is a four-act opera that displays the dramatic highs and lows involved in the game of chance. All of the characters fall victim to the temptation of gambling, each one consumed by the obsession and greed that drives them.

Pianist Matan Porat invites us on a musical journey from morning until the dead of night. His program, selected as much for its variety as for the smooth tonal transitions between each piece, is a work of art in itself. Gregorian chant opens and closes the day, while Schumann gently moves us into light with his introspective but radiant “Gesänge der Frühe.” Music by Beethoven, Debussy, Scriabin, Liszt, Thomas Adès—plus Bartók’s unnerving portrait of nighttime (“The Night’s music”) and an exciting world premiere recording of Matthias Pintscher’s “Whirling tissue of light”—provide fascinating individual interpretations of different times of day. Each is played with clarity, sensitivity, and a beautiful sense of narrative.

Johann Baptist Joseph Maximilian Reger (19 March 1873 – 11 May 1916), commonly known as Max Reger, was a German composer, pianist, organist, conductor, and academic teacher. He worked as a concert pianist, as a musical director at the Leipzig University Church, as a professor at the Royal Conservatory in Leipzig, and as a music director at the court of Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen. Reger first composed mainly Lieder, chamber music, choral music and works for piano and organ. He later turned to orchestral compositions, such as the popular Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Mozart, and to works for choir and orchestra such as Gesang der Verklärten (1903), Der 100. Psalm (1909), Der Einsiedler and the Hebbel Requiem (both 1915).

There are not enough words in the English language to describe how good this performace is. The quality of the recording is also quite good. If you are looking for the definitive version of Ravel's masterpiece, you have just found it.

There's a little joke behind the innocuous name of Ernest Bloch's Symphony in E-flat. It is, in truth, one of his most harmonically acerbic works, very close to the tortured contrapuntal idiom of another famous Swiss composer: Honegger. The piece only really achieves its home key in the quiet, final bars, but along the way sparks fly in all directions, and no matter how dissonant the idiom the argument is very easy to follow, and melodies and motives have distinctive, easily recognizable shapes.

GRAMOPHONE CRITICS' CHOICE 2011. BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE DISC OF THE MONTH. Inspired by the rural beauty of the surroundings at his country retreat in 1917, Edward Elgar embarked on the composition of some of his most inspired and imaginative chamber works. Both the String Quartet and the Piano Quintet are works of great depth and elegance. Their conservative style disregards the compositional trends of the time and displays an unabashed late-romanticism. Elgar wrote: ‘It is full of golden sounds and I like it. But you must not expect anything violently chromatic or cubist.’ The disc features sumptuous playing from the acclaimed Goldner String Quartet, who are joined by pianist Piers Lane for Elgar’s sublime Piano Quintet, a large-scale work of almost orchestral sonority. These masterpieces are accompanied by four previously unrecorded works for solo piano, the last of which was written by Elgar at the age of 72. They are intimate, charming rarities, superbly performed by Lane.

In his second disc for BIS, Maxim Rysanov here is joined by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra under the conductor Muhai Tang. Described as 'a prince among violists', Maxim Rysanov was in 2010 chosen to perform at the Last Night of the Proms. On that illustrious occasion he played his own adaptation of Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations. The string section of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra of that orchestra also join him in another work usually performed on the cello – and usually with the original piano accompaniment: Schubert's Sonata in A minor. The programme is rounded off with the one completely original composition on this disc, namely the autumnal Romance in F major by Max Bruch.

Lawrence Power makes the second of his appearances in this month’s release lists, this time with his regular pianist partner Simon Crawford-Phillips in the chamber music of Shostakovich. The centrepiece is the Viola Sonata, Shostakovich’s last completed work, premiered posthumously, on what would have been the composer’s sixty-ninth birthday. Its ravishing slow finale reworks the opening of Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight’ Sonata—a tribute to a composer he revered. Shostakovich the film composer also takes a bow, in the form of The Gadfly, with its famous ‘Romance’ beloved of violinists everywhere. That this works just as compellingly on the viola is triumphantly displayed in the arrangement made by Vadim Borisovsky (founding violist of the Beethoven Quartet), one of the Five Pieces he recast from Shostakovich’s original. Shostakovich’s 24 Piano Preludes have also proved irresistible to transcribers and here we have the seven brilliantly reworked by a pupil of Borisovsky, Yevgeny Strakhov.

From the opening notes of “Brouillards,” it’s clear why Alexander Melnikov has chosen one of his own historic pianos for Debussy’s second volume of Préludes. His French Erard piano, from around 1885, possesses a chiming bass, a delicate yet resonant upper register, and a warm middle. It’s ideal for music that so often requires a fine brushstroke. Melnikov obliges, playing with exquisite restraint, control, and voicing as he whisks us to sun-drenched, humid India, the world of illustrator Arthur Rackham’s fairies and to a firework display, full of brilliant, nervous tension. Melnikov is joined by Olga Pashchenko for a thrilling performance of Debussy’s arrangement for four hands of his orchestral suite La Mer.

The music of 1920s Berlin was a reaction to the city’s conflicted political atmosphere. A new breed of composer emerged, eschewing the old and embracing a heady mix of cabaret, 12-tone serialism, and New York jazz. With dramatist Bertolt Brecht as their muse, they wrote startlingly original, often beautiful, music with bold, anarchic messages. The rich, seductive voice of Marion Rampal and her incredible group of musicians give vibrant life to the best, from Hanns Eisler’s defiantly anti-Fascist Nein and Kurt Weill’s tribute to Rosa Luxemburg, Ballad of the Drowned Girl, to Hindemith’s riotous demolition of an overture by Wagner, Hitler’s favourite composer.

Gianfrancesco Malipiero (1882-1973), harboured particular affection for his Concerto No. 1 for Violin, that he “finished composing” on 10th March 1932. Malipiero considered his solo concertos composed in the fertile years “prayers.” (We refer not only to the Concerto for Cello but also to the felicitous Concerto No. 1 for Violin composed in 1933, to the first two Concertos for Piano, respectively written in 1934 and 1937 and to the Concerto a tre – for violin, cello and piano – composed in 1938.)

This disc, another in the Maggini Quartet's series of recordings of string quartets by twentieth century English composers for Naxos, brings together the three quartets of Lennox Berkeley. And as in the group's previous recordings of quartets by Bridge, Arnold, and Rawsthorne, the music proves as excellent as it is unexpected. Berkeley's quartets date from 1935, 1941, and 1970, and each sounds like a work of its time yet still characteristic of the composer.
